Horton place National park is one of the world’s best nature rose and eco tourism venues. It is  characterized by a beautiful landscape of rolling hills,. covered in upper montane forest and wet patana grassland. In general, the forest is seen on the hilltops or upper slopes the grasslands in the valleys and lower slopes., eventually giving way to wetland habitats.

The horton place feature many interesting attractions like “bakers falls” anf famous “worlds end”.A 3700 ft sheer that drop that offers fabulous views of the tea estates below and all the way out to distant southern coastline.

Circular Treck

The visitors center is an important mark because, it has become the starting point for the 9 km main trek of the Horton Plains. The main trek taking a circular route can be enjoyed within 3 hours. The trail opens up with a view of flora, grassland and densely wooded cloud forest. Once the grasslands are passed, the trek leads for about 2km through a cloud forest. 2 km more into the wilderness takes to an escarpment called mini World’s End .

Mini World’s End

Abandoning mini world’s end will be a huge mistake if you neglect it. Mini World’s End Passara is a gulf and not less than 1250 feet in depth. It seems like a younger brother of the World’s end’ lying at Hortain plains. It is evident as soon as you enter the place that it is heaven, and we are the gods looking into the entire earth.

You’re advised not to look down into the abyss; sudden wind gusts will push you in to the abyss.

World’s end

One of the attraction of Horton plains is world’s end. There are infact two of them. `The small world’s end” and “The big world’s end” they are about 0.8km (1/2mile) apart from each other. From these, one could see the fall to the Tea states down bellow. from the big one. From here one could get a fantastic view of the surrounding hills and the mountain ranges wreathed in mists and clouds and on clear days even the Indian ocean.

Birds

All of the Montane endemics of Sri Lanka are found in Horton Plains. Sri Lanka bush warbler, Dull-Blue flycatcher, Sri Lanka whistling thrush and the yellow-eared bulbul, Sri Lanka Wood Pigeon, Sri Lanka White-eye, Dull-blue Flycatcher, Sri Lanka Bush Warbler, Scaly Thrush, Sri Lanka Jungle-fowl. Also the Black Bird, Mountain Hawk Eagle and many more.

Mamals

Mammals in the park are the Strip-necked Mongoose, Long-tailed Giant Squirrel Wild Boar, the endemic Bear Monkey and Toque Monkey, Fishing cat, Otter, Slender Loris, Barking deer, are found here. The most frequent wildlife site at Horton Plains are herds of Sambar Deer. Now the Horton Plains has become a happy field of herds of Sambar Deer.

Bambdara Kanda Falls

This fall, due to its sheer drop of 241 m, is the highest in the whole of Sri Lanka. Set amid an evergreen forest, it is formed by the Uduweriya Haputale mountains’ Kuda Oya (river), a tributary of the Walawe River. It cascades in a torrent, centuries of wind and rain have formed what is said to resemble two embracing lovers out of the rock.

Baker’s Falls

With a height of 20m, Baker’s Falls, are situated on the Belihul Oya within the Horton Plains National Park. This waterfall is named after Sir Samuel Baker, who resided on the island from 1847 to 1855. Baker used to explore to find the best hunting grounds to be found on the island and the waterfall he used to stop at frequently was named after him.

Weather guide

The weather can change very quickly on the plains, one minute it can be sunny and clear, the next chilly and misty. Bring a few extra layers of warm clothing. Wear strong and comfortable hiking shoes, a hat and sunglasses. Bring sunscreen, and food and water. Best time to be at World’s End would be by 7 in the morning.
