Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay

The island’s premier surfing destination, Arugam Bay, is a laid-back village and the most captivating resort on Sri Lanka’s east coast. With its moon-shaped crescent of soft sand, Arugam Bay is home to a renowned point break that is widely considered the best surf spot in the country.

Located approximately 70 km east of Monaragala and 5 km south of the bustling town of Pottuvil, Arugam Bay (or A-Bay, as it’s affectionately called) has long been a favorite among dedicated surfers. Its waves are celebrated as the best in Sri Lanka, attracting surf enthusiasts from around the globe. However, Arugam Bay is not just for surfers—it offers a relaxed, unpretentious charm, a variety of cozy, rustic accommodations, and access to stunning natural and historical attractions. Nearby highlights include the elephant-rich Lahugala National Park and the evocative ruins of Magul Maha Vihara.

The village, though remote, is well worth the journey. While the beaches in the south may be more accessible, they lack the unique character and peaceful vibe of Arugam Bay. Beyond surfing, the area is dotted with beachfront guesthouses and restaurants, exuding a relaxed “swing-another-day-in-a-hammock” atmosphere that stands in stark contrast to the bustling beach resorts of the west coast.

Arugam Bay also serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding hinterland. During the low season (November to April), the village becomes much quieter, with many businesses closing their doors. However, this period has its own allure, offering a tranquil escape with lush, glistening green landscapes and minimal crowds.
