A few kilometers beyond Weligama lies the picture-perfect stretch of sand in the village of Mirissa, once celebrated as the island’s most famously “undiscovered” beach. While the days of having this idyllic spot to yourself are long gone, Mirissa still retains its charm. The beach, among the most beautiful on the island, features a narrow strip of golden sand framed by a dense thicket of coconut palms that skillfully camouflage much of the surrounding development.

Mirissa is a destination designed for relaxation and serenity, perfect for simply sitting and soaking in the tranquil atmosphere. That said, the crystal-clear waters offer delightful opportunities for snorkelling around the reefs and rocks at either end of the bay. Surfers, too, can enjoy an inconsistent yet fun right-hand point break at the western end. Many guesthouses in the area rent out snorkelling and surfing gear, making it easy to explore the ocean.

If you’re in the mood to stretch your legs, a few pleasant walks await. One trail leads up a steep staircase from the main road to the small Kandavahari Temple, while the headland offers stunning views of Weligama Bay.

A must-do activity for nearly every visitor is a whale-watching boat trip, which provides a chance to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Accommodations in Mirissa vary, but many offer basic amenities, often with cold-water facilities unless otherwise specified. Look for signs along the main road to find lodging and dining options, as many guesthouses also serve meals.
