Why visit Kandy? – Cultural Treasures of Sri Lanka

Kandy is a major city in Sri Lanka with deep historical roots, nature charms, and cultural significance. It is located about 115 km northeast of Colombo in the heart of the central province at an elevation of 500 meters above sea level. This major tourist destination is rich in cultural attractions and is home to the sacred Temple of the Tooth and many other temples that are of high importance for Buddhism worldwide. Established in the 15th century, Kandy served as the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, marking an end to over 2,000 years of royal rule history.

And playing a remarkable role in the country’s history, Kandy holds a high historical and cultural importance making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name “Kandy” originates from the Sinhala word “Kanda,” which stands for “hill,” reflecting its location in the heart of Sri Lanka’s mountainous region. This busy town is rich in cultural diversity and offers a variety of highlights, including traditional music/dancing, ancient temples, arts/ crafts, and also adventure opportunities.

All year-round Kandy is a beautiful destination to visit; but between December to April, it is pleasant and dry. If you want to experience the vibrant colors of Kandy culture, plan your visit in July or August when Esala Perahera takes place. Beautifully combining history, cultural values, and charms of nature, Kandy is a must-visit destination for travelers exploring Sri Lanka.
