Crack open a coconut, slip into a hammock and rock gently in the breeze, allowing the hours, days and even weeks to slip calmly by. Welcome to sleepy Mirissa, which is 4km southeast of Weligama, and a place so idyllic that only a fool would ever want to leave.
Marvel at the blue whales on a boat trip from Mirissa. Pick your catch of the day, have it freshly grilled at a beachside restaurant, enjoy a cocktail, eat authentic roti for less than $1, and take a tuk-tuk to see the famed stilt fishermen near Weligama.
Most of the foreshore remains the domain of coconut trees, You’ll need to go to Matara for most services, although there are internet and phone places, and small markets near town.
Mirissa is designed for sitting and being, not for doing. Having said that, the water is deliciously clear and, around the reefs and rocks at either end, it’s excellent for snorkelling. Surfers will find an inconsistent but fun right point at the western end of the bay. Many of the guesthouses have snorkelling and surfing gear to rent. If you do need to move, then there are some pleasant walks. One heads up a steep series of steps from the main road to the small Kandavahari temple, while the headland is a good spot to view Weligama Bay.The one activity that almost every visitor to Mirissa takes part in is a whale-watching boat trip.
Mirissa Beach, on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, is a perfect spot with soft golden sand, clear blue water, and tall palm trees. It’s a great place to relax or have fun. Here’s why you should visit.
Some comments from the Travellers
A Special Family Trip
Our family had an amazing time at Mirissa Beach. We stayed at Vacanza Mirissa, just a minute from the beach. It was easy to go back and forth, which was great for our kids. They loved playing in the waves and running on the sand. Seeing them so happy made our trip even better.
Fun and Relaxing
Mirissa Beach is lively but not too crowded. Locals, surfers, and visitors all enjoy the peaceful vibe. The beach is clean, and there are many cafes and restaurants. You can relax on a sunbed with a King Coco or have a tasty meal. There’s something for everyone.
For a good deal, go to the left side of the beach. Sunbeds cost just 1,000 LKR and often include a free King Coco. If you don’t want to pay, just find a free spot and order a drink from a nearby cafe.
Beautiful Sunsets and Great Food
The sunsets at Mirissa are stunning. The sky turns orange, pink, and purple, creating a magical view. We loved sitting at a beach cafe to enjoy the evening.
One of our favorite moments was eating at Dewmini Roti Shop. The food was delicious, and it was the perfect way to end our day.
